SLCene Suggests: Big Boi and Killer Mike at The Depot

by on May 8, 2013
BIG BOI/KILLER MIKE, THE DEPOT, Thursday, May 9, 9 p.m., $26 advance/$31 day of show
During Outkast’s excellent run of hit albums, many people (myself included) attributed the Atlanta duo’s originality more to multi-faceted freak Andre 3000 than the seemingly more straightforward and intense Big Boi. Once Big Boi released his first solo set, Sir Lucious Left Foot: The Son of Chico Dusty, I was quickly disabused of that notion. The album was a wildly inventive set of hip-hop and funk that showed Big Boi as every bit the creative force of his Outkast partner. Big Boi’s follow-up album, Vicious Lies and Dangerous Rumors, is even more expansive, and includes collaborations with unlikely guests like Little Dragon and Phantogram, as well as Ludacris, T.I. and the man sharing Big Boi’s current tour, Killer Mike. In fact, Big Boi and Killer Mike released a mixtape of their collaborations to celebrate their current jaunt across the U.S. Shoes For Running is a fun listen, and this show should be one of the best of the spring.
